Help Needed for Hurricane Relief Effort

As the enormity of the Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort sets in, many of us are seeking ways to help.  Below is a list of several area volunteer opportunities and donation sites, as well as U.S. Postal Service information regarding mail deliveries to theGulf Coast.  Additionally, we have identified numerous web sites for seeking people still missing in the aftermath of the storm.  Please share this information with anyone who is interested, and note that these updates can be sent directly to your e-mail inbox by registering online at www.greenspoint.org.

Donation Locations

Greenspoint Mall, 12300 North Freeway, is collecting donations at the customer service booth during mall hours.  Non-perishable food, bottled water, gas cards, toiletries, blankets/pillows, baby food and powdered formula are among the items needed there. Additionally, Greenspoint Mall is accepting pet food for the Houston Human Society.

Harvest Time Church, 17770 Imperial Valley Drive , is collecting non-perishable items and toiletries.

MaGoo’s Print Shop, 16637 West Hardy, Suite E, is a convenience drop-off location with limited space and is accepting non-perishable foods, toiletries, clothing and school supplies.

The Arrow Project is housing numerous refugee families and needs everything from food to toiletries, including school clothes and school supplies for children.  Donations can be taken to Beckwith’s Auto Repair, 1919 FM 1960 Bypass East; Baumann Paint and Body, 2019 FM1960 East; or Team Ford, 19000 HWY 59 N in Humble. Specify that your donation is for The Arrow Project.

The Northwest Assistance Ministries, 15555 Kuykendahl, needs food, bedding, clothes, toiletries, school supplies and various other items.  NAM assists numerous shelters and other organizations and can use all donations.

The Aldine YMCA at 10960 North Freeway is accepting gift cards to Wal-Mart or other area stores. All YMCA locations throughout the Houston region are serving as collection sites. Call your local Y to see what items they need.

The Tomball Community Center, 211 Market Street in Tomball, is seeking air mattresses, towels, wash cloths, linens and pillows.

Volunteers Needed

The Northwest Assistance Ministries, 15555 Kuykendahl, needs the following volunteers in two shifts, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.  Volunteers are asked to report directly to the locations indicated below.

 

5 volunteers per shift -  Project Room (15555 Kuykendahl)

4 volunteers per shift - Food Pantry (15555 Kuykendahl)

5 volunteers per shift - Resale Shop (2580 West FM 1960)

4 volunteers per shift - Intake vouchers in Lobby (15555 Kuykendahl)

2 volunteers - to sit at volunteer table in Lobby (15555 Kuykendahl)

 

Goodwill Industries Katrina Relief Center, 5200 Jensen Drive, needs volunteers daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday to unload and sort donations that are distributed to those in need.  Call 713-699-6361 for details.

Missing People

The following web sites are available to post photos and provide information about missing people or to search for messages from hurricane victims attempting to contact loved ones.

Mail Service Information

 

A number of restrictions have been placed around deposit, acceptance and delivery of mail in locations impacted by Hurricane Katrina.  The United States Postal Service is issuing frequent updates at www.usps.com/communications/news/serviceupdates.htm.
